Sometimes I think we have forgotten that the bedrock of our Christian faith is the unmerited, fathomless marvel of the love of God exhibited on the Cross of Calvary, a love we never can and never shall merit. Please read it again and just soak it in – it is fresh water to the soul!
All the time I hear Christians stressing legalistic rules and regulations that they feel they (and others) have to perform in order to avoid going to hell. Too many Christians waste their energy worrying that God is angry with them, or that they haven’t done enough to make Him happy. If you’re operating within that paradigm, let me assure you, IF God is angry (as the Evangelicals assert), then whatever you’re trying to do/believe/pray/think is never going to be enough. What if God isn’t angry with you after all? What if Jesus came to show us just that Truth – to undo the crazy legal system and prove that God LOVES you so much, He’d rather DIE than live without you? Relax and trust Christ: He is not angry with you – His life and death proves this. Besides, He has done it all!
Hebrews 4 is a great help. I like how Peter Hiett puts it at the end of most of his messages: “Believe the Gospel.” That is our work … trusting in Christ’s work on the cross, not our own works.
