Looking Forward in 2018

Happy New Year!!

Abraham Hicks likes to remind us that our inner being never looks back. In fact, whatever is manifesting today is the result of a bygone vibration. She often describes the present as a piece of gum that has had all of the flavor chewed out of it. If Hicks is right, then for me to experience the reality of change, my vibration must change ahead of the manifestation. That is basic Quantum Physics at its best – feeling the emotions of future events yet to occur. But human beings find it difficult not to look back and almost impossible to take their attention off of what is. For me, examining the past and present have become useful for only one thing: Identifying attitudes, patterns, and habits that need to be left behind.

On December 8, 9, and 10th, I had the privilege of attending the last Progressive Workshop to be held in this country by teacher and neuroscientist, Dr. Joe Dispenza. Over the course of the weekend, I (along with 700+ students) learned to use meditation to exercise the higher emotions of gratitude, appreciation, joy, love, and others.

Newtonian physics is a scientific model based on the idea of reaction rather than creation. According to Newton, all of my emotions are dictated by my outer world, so that what is happening around me and to me produces my reactions and the subsequent feelings I experience in my body. Under that model, for me to express gratitude would require receiving something for which I am grateful. But there is a scientific alternative to Newtonian Physics called Quantum Physics. This model teaches that I can train my body to experience the feelings of a better future just by thought alone.

I have long known that nothing in my outer world can make me feel any type of way. Thoughts always dictate emotions. When I understand this, I give myself the power to change my inner world ahead of my outer world. If I can learn to think better thoughts that will produce better emotions, then even if my outer world never changes, I will live a life of inner fulfillment. I cannot imagine a better future than that!

What if it were possible to take our attention off of what is and what has been, and refocus instead on our hopes and dreams of something better? Can we find a way to feel the emotions of the future we desire before it manifests in real time? In fact, we must! The only way to change our vibration is to change the thoughts and emotions that produce it. We must find a way to look forward if we are to move forward as individuals, communities, and a global human race.

There is so much that I am looking forward to in the coming year. I bet you have high hopes for 2018 as well. But if all of our attention remains fixed on what went wrong last year, last election, or the last decade, if the people and things in our lives that have caused us pain continue to capture and divide our attention, we will have no energy left to look forward in head (thought) and heart (emotion) to a new and better future. Living in the negative emotions of the past only creates more of the same moving forward. And that is the consummate definition of insanity.

May we all find the inner strength to leave behind the pain of the past and choose our heart’s future in this generous present moment. And may 2018 be filled with abundance, love, joy, and gratitude beyond anything we have ever dreamed possible.
